Reinstall and update
The device settings page has two buttons that rebuild DashKeep on the camera’s memory card:
- Reinstall DashKeep: for after a card format, a card swap, or any time the DashKeep install has gone from the card. The camera’s own firmware update overwrites the DashKeep patch. A formatted or replaced card has nothing on it at all.
- Update firmware: for bringing the camera up to the newest published firmware and the newest DashKeep app.
Both buttons open the same flow and run the same process. Only the page’s title changes.
The flow
Section titled “The flow”- Connect the camera’s memory card to this computer and give the browser access to it, the same way as during setup. Use the newest Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.
- Download the manufacturer’s newest firmware and copy it onto the card, replacing the file already there.
- DashKeep patches the firmware and writes it back to the card. It puts the newest DashKeep app on and writes a fresh
dashkeep.datwith your saved settings: the name, icon, and colour, the Wi-Fi networks, and the home zones.
The new device key
Section titled “The new device key”The configuration on the card contains a new device key. The old key stops working the moment the flow writes the new file, so the camera can’t talk to your account between the write and its next boot. Finish the flow the same day you start it.
The flow creates the key only when it’s about to write the file to the card. Leave the flow before that point, or close the page before the write, and the camera’s current key keeps working. If the flow stops after that point, run it again from the start: it creates another key and writes a complete new configuration.
Your footage, trips, subscription, and sharing don’t change. The device is the same camera with the same hardware address, and it reconnects to the same account.
If you use the Community Edition with your own S3 bucket, re-enter your S3 credentials in the device’s settings afterwards. The stored copy uses the previous device key for its seal. The new key can seal a fresh copy.
Reinstall or rebuild the configuration
Section titled “Reinstall or rebuild the configuration”Each page fixes a different problem:
- Reinstall and update runs the whole install: a fresh patched firmware, the DashKeep app, and the configuration. Use it after a card format or a swap, or when DashKeep has gone from the camera entirely.
- Download to SD card, advanced rebuilds only the
dashkeep.datconfiguration file. Use it when the camera is otherwise fine but can’t pick up your changes. Most often that’s after Wi-Fi network or home zone changes. It also covers a missing configuration file while the app itself still runs.
Only the device’s owner can reinstall a device. Someone you share the device with can change settings, but the reinstall buttons don’t appear.
